David Benjamin - The Living
Founding Principal, Associate Professor at Columbia GSAPP

David Benjamin is the Founding Principal of The Living and an Associate Professor at Columbia GSAPP, where he advances pioneering research at the intersection of biology, computation, and environmental design. His work positions buildings as dynamic living systems and develops scalable strategies for decarbonization through material innovation, digital fabrication, and bio-integrated design. Internationally recognized projects such as Hy-Fi at MoMA PS1 demonstrate how biodegradable materials and circular construction methods can significantly reduce embodied carbon while redefining architectural performance.
Through his practice and academic leadership, Benjamin has emerged as a leading voice in regenerative and climate responsive architecture. His work bridges research and built applications, translating experimental investigations into actionable models for low carbon construction and sustainable urban development. By combining scientific inquiry with design intelligence, he continues to expand architecture’s role in addressing the environmental challenges of our time.
