Why  ?

The built environment accounts for nearly 40% of global COâ‚‚ emissions, much of it embedded in materials before a building is even used. As operational energy improves, embodied carbon now defines a building’s true climate impact. Global building floor area is projected to double by 2060, adding nearly 230 billion square metres of new construction. As buildings become more energy efficient, embodied carbon can account for up to 50–70% of a new building’s total lifetime emissions, particularly in the first decades after construction. Early design decisions therefore carry lasting environmental consequences. Carbon- conscious material choices are central to responsible architecture.

Carbon Ecologies

The programe positions low-carbon materials as a starting point for design. Carbon is not an add-on, but a driver shaping form, structure, and fabrication. Through experimentation and making, participants explore how material decisions can redefine architectural expression and impact.

Bangalore

Hosted in Bangalore, the workshop sits within one of India’s fastest-growing urban regions. Rapid urbanisation and expanding infrastructure make it a critical site to rethink material choices and carbon impact. With a strong startup culture and a growing ecosystem of material and climate innovation, Bangalore offers a real-world context where low carbon ideas are actively tested, produced, and deployed.
